I have had the same experience with a 144MHz handheld, though it only happens
when the radio is within about three feet of the computer. It appeared
(though I didn't want to experiment too many times trying it out :-) that
the power supply was shutting down while the transmitter was being
keyed.

While tuning the dial this evening I heard W6ADO sending "code
practice" at 7.1 MHz (about 6:30 pm PST Sunday). Here's
a bit of the content:
"Fix our thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high
priest whom we confess. Be faithful to the one who
appointed him - just as Moses was faithful in all
God's use."
Kind of odd text for code practice, eh? (Unless W6ADO is actually
engaged in proselytizing.) Anyone know how long this has been
going on?

W6PDA (nee' WB6ZMS) in San Diego ran the complete New Testament as "code
practice" for more than a year until his radio flamed out. That was
several years ago, but I've heard other stations doing it at one place
or another on the bands off and on for a long long time.
Must be a conspiracy.

Subject: iambic keyer question
I have just started to learn how to use an iambic keyer. I use my left hand
for the keyer but friends have told me i should reverse the paddles function.
My question is: is there some phycical reason for this? i.e. is the thumb better
for sending dits??? Just dont see any reason for swithing the functions.

Yes. I remember some of these PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS. I suppose
I may be an old-timer by some standards; I am 27 and I've been licensed
for 9 years.
I have about 15 different promos for Amateur Radio, on reel-to-reel.
They "star" Dick Van Dyke, Lorne Green, Bob Hope, and a couple of others
that I can't remember. They are in :10, :15, :30, :45, and :60 lengths.
They are very well done, and I have had them played at radio stations
before and during field day in the past. These promos directly support
the ARRL. [I no longer can support the ARRL, however, because of their
lack of response to their members concerns.]
>Are they even affordable today?
Notice that these are PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS. Radio and
Television Broadcast stations will run PSAs for FREE!!!!! Don't call
them ads, or commercials; call them PSAs. (I know, I used to work for
several different AM & FM BC stations.)

The Radio Shack discone antenna has worked very well for me. I have it
mounted on a 20 foot mast attached to the chimney on my one story house.
I use it both with my PRO-2004 scanner and as a transmitting antenna with my
25 watt 2 meter rig. I am able to bring up repeaters about 100 miles away
with this setup. As a receive antenna used with the PRO-2004 it is great.
The wide bandwidth matches that of the scanner. So far the antenna has
performed well for me across its advertised bandwidth.
I guess you could disassemble it and use it as a portable if you don't mind
unscrewing the 16 rods that make up the disc and the cone.

Now it's one thing to be able to buy frequencies allocated to your
local police or DEA office. But entirely another to disclose critical
information relating to the trash-removal industry and dump sites! Can
you imagine this information in the wrong hands?
The next time someone puts green glass in the clear glass recylcing
container and gets away with it, because THEY could monitor the carting
company frequencies, well, it's on your conscience, not mine.

Good move. You will pay less than half the price that you would for a
Japanese rice box, and at current performance levels, you will get twice
the performance.

I think the best are Microwave Modules, from Liverpool, and
Single-Sideband Electronics, from someplace in W. Germany. They are
distributed in this country (USA) by a number of vendors.
